Mechanical Gyroscope
The Gyroscope is a mechanical device designed to resist any outside force and stay aligned. They accomplish their purpose by Gyroscopic inertia. Gyroscopic inertia is the custom of a spinning object to continue to spin on it's axis of rotation, and resist outside force.
There are many different kinds of gyroscopes, two of which are mechanical and optical.
Mechanical Gyroscope
When you normally see a gyroscope in a store or online, you are seeing a Mechanical Gyroscope. A mechanical gyroscope basically consists of a wheel or a rotor on a gimbal ring. The gimbal will pivot in the frame, and the gyroscope can freely rotate. The original gyroscope was mechanical, and created by J.C. Bohenberger. (Read More in "The Beginning of Gyroscopes ") The figure to the left shows a mechanical gyroscope.

Optical Gyroscopes

Optical Gyroscopes are a unique type of gyroscope in the fact that they have no moving parts. Inside the gyroscope laser light beams shoot off in different directions around the ring. The light waves are balanced unless tilted and they become uneven. The change can be measured using modern computers. The optical gyroscope is becoming a main gyroscope used in commercial airplanes.
