Gyroscopic Turning Points
The Gyroscope allowed for many advancements in technology. As the Gyroscope developed into bigger and better things. One invention led to the next and the gyroscopes potential branched out to many different fields, from balance to transportation to warfare.
From 1810 to 1852 the gyroscope's potential was still being uncovered. In the 1890's, torpedoes became the first devices to be controlled by gyroscopes. Not only does this mark a major milestone for the gyroscope, but the military too. With the Wright Brothers successful flight, a whole new area for the gyroscope to improve was opened. In 1908, Kaempfe's creation of the gyrocompass set standards for how the gyroscope could possibly assist in aviation. A year later, Elmer Sperry made a gyrocompass of his own and creates "Metal Mike", the first ever autopilot. Only Six years after the first successful flight, gyroscopes have worked their way into aviation. This means that not only did they revolutionize aviation, but they practically shaped it from the beginning.
